All Aboard the New Stripe: Valentino Resort 2015

Stripes will never go out of style. However, the typical nautical stripes have found their match through a different style of stripes.

One of the major trends seen on the Resort 2015 shows was stripes, but the new and bold stripe. This was most Valentinonoticeably seen at the Valentino Resort 2015 show.

Duo designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino looked to the artist Frida Kahlo for inspiration in this collection. Over the past year the designers have been working on their own and the labels wilder side through animal motifs and strong collections. This is evident in this collection, filled with bold and bright pieces and showing off the new stripe: the rainbow zigzag.

The collection began with a folkloric style, functional pieces with a sense of fantasy. The animal motifs seen in abundance, through embroidered and embellished parrots and monkeys.

As the show went on, Chiuri and Piccioli looked to the past again, by revisiting the prints in the Valentino shows of the early 70’s. These prints were truly psychedelic and by pairing them with an equally jarring background, the show was visually disruptive but impossible to look away from.

The print was graphic and multicoloured, a chevron stripe. The colour combinations were something a little more adventurous than Valentino is used to; lemon yellow, petal pink, turquoise, Kelly green and coral. The design house’s colour palette is often more muted than these colours, giving their customers something new and exciting.

Although the designer duo’s inspiration was historical, through the artist Frida Kahlo and the prints used from the archives of Valentino, the overall feel of the collection was truly modern.

Even the accessories were strong against a boisterous collection, with mini and oversized clutches, totes and shoulder bags done in various fabrics, designs and prints. The chevron print was seen repeated on some as well.

The collection painted a truly unique picture, from the animal and folkloric pieces at the beginning of the show to the psychedelic pop art style of the finale. As the infamous saying for the candy Skittles goes: You could taste the rainbow.
