New York State of Mind
A person’s first visit to New York City always leaves a lasting impression. It has so many defining characteristics that, regardless of its tremendous size, everyone has a very different and personal experience there.
After her first trip to New York, Toronto based fashion designer Anu Raina was moved by the city’s unusual combination of power and vulnerability. Raina decided to capture the cool downtown chic of Manhattan through design. Anu Raina’s F/W 2013 collection, appropriately titled NY.NY, offers a remarkable rendition of New York through her eyes.
The most striking and evident feature of the collection is the use of patterns that were hand drawn by Raina. The intricate and masterful prints were inspired by the architecture, old subways and graffiti art in New York City. The palette offers a look at the colours of the cityscape: smoky blues, grays and rusty browns. The occasional pop of neon or pastel pink is incorporated into the line through the graffiti art prints. The collection includes paneled dresses, boyfriend blouses and abstract shifts. Standout pieces include the Harlem Scarf, the Bronx Dress and the Manhattan Skirt. Check out her entire collection online at anuraina.com
