NICHE magazine, BC’s most sought after source for everything fashion and lifestyle, is searching for an experienced, highly creative SR. MAGAZINE GRAPHIC DESIGNER to join the NICHE team. Our ideal candidate lives for visual creativity, is fascinated by the opportunity to think outside of the box, wants to push creative boundaries, and understands that everyday fashion can be presented to readers in new and unexpected ways. NICHE magazine is currently based in Victoria, BC.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting directly to the Editor in Chief, the Sr. Magazine Graphic Designer will be responsible for guiding the visual personality of the publication(s). The successful candidate will have significant graphic design expertise, an appreciation for fashion publishing, and the ability to create sophisticated page designs. We are looking for someone with a well developed artistic vision.

The Sr. Magazine Graphic Designer will design magazine pages for all markets in which NICHE magazine is published and ensure the NICHE brand messaging is clear, our fashion point of view is evident and our aesthetic remains distinctly unique and fashion forward.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design NICHE magazine pages and monitor quality control at all stages
  • Produce projects from start to finish, effectively managing the creative process, photography, illustration, production, media and freelance support, and other resources necessary for each project
  • Create new ad designs and modify existing design files for advertising clients
  • Work closely with NICHE team to conceive ideas for all magazine pages
  • Retouch for photo editorials and covers – ensuring highest quality control
  • Mark up all hard copy proof pages for colour, checking all type proofs and colour proofs to ensure that the required standard of reproduction is maintained. This will include liaising with print and press partners
  • Contribute to the planning and development of creative ideas for future editorial calendars
  • Design cover art in collaboration with Editor in Chief and Publisher

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Mac platform
  • Proficient at InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in graphic design
  • Ability to create clean press-ready files for print
  • Strong progressive portfolio that demonstrates page layout and design, sophisticated typography and production skills, and a keen eye for detail
  • Demonstrated ability to think effectively and with imagination under pressure
  • Skilled at colour correction and retouching
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
  • A sense of humour is a must in this industry
